SUMMARY OF POSITION:

A large construction company in The Woodlands is seeking an Indirect Tax Manager to join their team on a direct-hire basis. In this role, the Indirect Tax Manager will perform indirect state and local tax functions, including compliance, process improvement, research, and audit support related to the company’s state sales, use, property tax, local excise tax, and business license registration/renewal; and perform related work as required. This position reports directly to the Controller and is onsite four days/week with one day WFH.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Reconcile sales tax returns to underlying return details, general ledgers, and systems of original entry
  • Follow the Tax Compliance Calendar to ensure all state and local jurisdictional special returns are filed promptly
  • Develop an in-depth functional knowledge of the company and its industry to identify sales and use tax issues and provide value-add recommendations
  • Handle sales/use tax audits, prepare responses to taxing authorities, and address any audit findings
  • Research indirect tax requirements for new locations or acquisitions, coordinating with relevant departments to ensure compliance
  • Stay up to date with tax laws to ensure compliance and provide strategic guidance to senior management
  • Assist with the implementation of sales and use tax software
  • Manage property tax compliance and develop a strategy to minimize liabilities
  • Manage property tax rendition and payment tax calendar
  • Maintain monthly property tax accrual schedule
  • In charge of business license registration and renewal
  • Work closely with other teams, such as accounting and operations, to ensure that all tax-related matters are handled efficiently and effectively.
  • Undertake ad-hoc tasks and projects as required by senior management

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, or a related field is required
  • 3 to 5 plus years of experience in a broad range of state and local property tax, annual reports, and other non-income tax processes and tools
  • Oracle Cloud & SmartView Reporting experience strongly preferred
  • Advanced Excel and analytical skills are required
